According to information from the Aquatic Research and Development Centre (ARDC) in Kajjansi, Wakiso district, in 2018/ 2019 the national fish hatchery at Kajjansi hatched only 200,000 tons of Catfish fingerlings out of the one million tons set annual target.
Dr. Rukunya says the two projects are part of governments efforts to improve the livelihood of fishing communities around Lake Victoria and other water bodies.
Keleb Nuwahereza, a cage culture specialist at NaFIRRI says some of the cage fish farmers have limited the flow of water leading to the excessive development of organic matter from fish feeds, which pollutes water.
