President Yoweri Museveni, who met with about 60 of the incumbent National Resistance Movement MPs, says if they feel they have the support from voters to win in the 2016 elections, they are free to be nominated and stand as independents.
A decision by Parliament to vote to scrap government facilitation for campaigns of presidential candidates has rubbed some presidential aspirants the wrong way. A number of presidential aspirants have described as selfish the decision to amend the Presidential Elections Amendment Bill 2015 not to give facilitation.
The delegates conference is expected to discuss and adopt the resolutions by NEC. If adopted, the constitutioal amendments shall see the party chairman will more power including, that of apointing Secretary General.
NRM secretary General Amama Mbabazi eventually signed the petition. Mbabazi had initially indicated his interest in contesting for the presidency although he maintains his interest will be limited to the event that President Yoweri Museveni is standing down.
