Godfrey Kayemba, the Masaka Mayor says they agreed to resettle the vendors in the Childrens Park until the construction work is complete. He says they wanted the vendors out of the site so that by the time procurement of the contractor is done, the place is free.
Joseph Kazibwe, an eye witness, says the residents descended on Nakalyango accusing her of bewitching Sonko over a land dispute. He says the mob members chopped off Nakalyangos hands and hacked her several times on the head.
John Mwaule, the Masaka District Police Commander, says they were forced to arrest him after the community linked him to the murder. According to Mwaule, they are holding Lubega as a prime suspect in the murder.
The land located between Naludugavu road and Kyewalyanga road was home to Gaso, Link and other bus companies plying the Kampala-Masaka route. It has however been abandoned in the recent past following the insolvency of Gaso. Link Buses similarly stopped using the bus park.
Last evening, President Yoweri Museveni visited the disputed land in Mazigo, Bukakata Sub County and defended the allocation. He said the plan by Chinese investors will create over 17,000 jobs to dozens of unemployed people in the region.
Joseph Mugenyi, the Masaka Branch Manager NWSC says when they went to start clearing the land for the construction to start, the Municipality blocked them on grounds that the land had mistakenly been allocated to them.
Some of the documented spaces are Masaka Mayorâ€™s gardens, Childrenâ€™s Park, Masaka Bus park, Golf Course and Liberation Square. The others are Masaka resources Centre, Masaka Public library, Masaka Lorry Park, Masaka taxi park, Old Kumbi estate, Masaka Recreation ground among others.
Trouble started after Namugera allegedly defecated in the community well with intentions of stopping residents from using it after he sold off the land to Moses Kakooza, the Buwunga sub county NRM chairperson.
On Wednesday, officials of Masaka Municipality led by the Mayor Godfrey Kayemba rushed to the disputed land to investigate how Twinomucunguzi acquired it. Twinomucunguzi presented documents proving that he bought the land from Edward Ssekandi, the vice president.
