Community service, locally known as Bulungi Bwansi, is one of the Kiganda traditions aimed at encouraging voluntary community involvement in keeping the environs clean. However, with time, the tradition has been fading away.
The Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi has said there should not be intimidation of ordinary people by their leaders for the former to engage in community service or Bulungi Bwansi. Instead, says Bugandas 35th monarch, there should be consensus between the two groups.
However police spokesperson Onyango Patrick says police will not allow the planned city clean-up. He says the group is using the clean-up exercise as a veil to stage city demonstrations and cause chaos. He also says the police are keeping the city secure for the visiting East-African Community Presidents who are attending the EAC summit in Kampala today.
