Allan Ssempebwa, the spokesperson Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA told Uganda Radio Network in an interview on Tuesday evening that a team of UNRA officials including engineers and technical team is currently on ground inspecting, assessing and monitoring the water levels on the flooded bridge.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region Police spokesperson told Uganda Radio Network on Monday that some of the motorists were arrested while trying to sneak with passengers to other districts especially during the night hours, while others were found operating beyond 9pm.
The bridge, the longest across a river in East Africa, at 8 metres high and 525 metres long, was funded through a loan from Japanese International Cooperation Agency JICA and constructed by Zenitaka Corporation Company. It becomes the second gateway to the Eastern part of Uganda after the Owen Falls Bridge which has exceeded its lifespan.
