According to the preliminary results obtained from the electoral commission led by John Baptist Kawanga, Mao beat Dr. Michael Lulume Bayiga by a clear victory margin of 898 votes against Dr. Lulumes 360 votes to retain the top position in the party.
The Democratic Party DP has completed the purchase of a plot of land on which to construct party headquarters and plans to revive its newspaper The Citizen. The 0.78 hectares land is located on Kabaka Anjagala road in Rubaga. The land cost DP 200 million shillings which was paid off in installments. It is private mailo land. The revelations were made by Issa Kikungwe, the DP treasurer general during the partys national delegates conference on Saturday.
John Baptist Kawanga, the presiding officer of the elections says the exercise started late because after the aspiring candidates moved to meet the delegates region by region the delegates asked them to address them again that is why the exercise also delayed.
The Democratic Party DP elections have hit a snag after organisers realised they do not have enough ballot boxes to conduct the elections. The DP national delegates conference organisers had reportedly requested for 50 ballot boxes from the national Electoral Commission EC. EC handed over 15 ballot boxes.
Lulume an aspiring candidate for the DP presidency announced during the open campaigns of the party on Friday a head of the elections on Saturday that if the anomaly is not corrected he will challenge the outcome of the elections.
He explained that those who want DP Party positions are free to sit in resorts and elect themselves. This is a reference to the current DP delegates conference taking place at Katomi Kingdom Resort in Entebbe. Lukwago says his group is more interested in rallying the masses to demand and participate in bringing change in 2016.
The court of appeal has today thrown out a notice filed by Democratic Party President Norbert Mao, intending to appeal against a High Court judgment that nullified the election of Mathias Nsubuga as the party Secretary General.
