Locally known as Empango, the day is marked on June 11, every year. Empango is a celebration to mark the day, the reigning king ascended to the throne. Its an important function in Bunyoro and Tooro; it\'s during the ceremony that the king gives the state of the Kingdom address. A series of cultural rituals also are performed at the palace and the various kingdom historical sites, to appease the ancestors.

The 25-year old Princess Kabatalesa disagreed with her father's choice of a new Principal Private Secretary (PPS) and on November 2 wrote a letter sacking him. To ensure her decision received maximum attention, the letter sacking the newly appointed Omukama PPS Jonan Atuhura was circulated to the local press.
