In their presentation to the committee, Kiyingi appealed for a clear definition of fish maws sizes, court, gazetted or authorized areas for purposes of buying and selling of fish maws.
Minister Matia Kasaija proposes a levy to be charged on processed gold at the rate of United States Dollars 200 (730,000 Shillings) per kilogram which is exported out of Uganda.
Government proposes that this shall be paid by the exporter to the Uganda Revenue Authority- URA at the time the processed gold is exported out of Uganda.
Between 200-800 pieces of immature fish are needed to obtain 1kilogramme of fish maw and 5 to 10 pieces of Nile Perch needed to obtain 1kilogramme of fish maw from a fully grown Nile Perch. The minister says this does not give opportunity to young fish to mature leading to depletion of fish stocks.
