Squabbles among party members escalated last month when a section of members of the DP National Executive Committee suspended Betty Nambooze Bakireke, hitherto, the party Vice President for Buganda Region, for three months for allegedly splitting the party.
Bonny Kasujja, the DP Chairman Masaka municipality, says Maos reign is a liability to the party. According to Kasujja, Mao only concentrates on suppressing descent within the party as opposed to finding solutions to key problems.
The meeting was convened by a section of Democratic Party members led by Masaka Municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga to discuss, among others, the recent suspension of Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze from the party.
Paul Ssembajjwe, the UYD National Vice Chairperson has confirmed receiving the petition, saying he will pass it over to the National Executive Committee, which is scheduled to convene on Wednesday next week.
Electoral Commission figures indicate that more than half of the nominated candidates running for parliamentary and local council positions are independents. There are 2000 nominated candidates across the country.
