Eng. Christina Kakeeto, the Director Makerere University Estates and Works Department, says has directed all staff to remove the illegal structures and plantations from the university land.
In his current capacity as the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe wrote to Jackson Mucunguzi, the Chief Security Officer, listing five key issues which he asked police to urgently address. Key among the issues raised was the boda boda cyclists who continue to enter the university yet they are banned from going beyond the gates.
Makerere University has finally demolished the illegal kiosks that have been serving cheap food to students. The demolition was done last week on the orders of the Universitys outgoing vice chancellor, Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu. This came just a day to the reopening of the new semester on Saturday.
Prof. Ddumba says that while the University Estates and Works department will deal with university staff with kiosks, he wants the Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura to handle his officers.
The re-erected kiosks which were operating as cafeterias providing cheap food to students have started running same businesses again. Some owners of the re-erected kiosks sent warnings to the vice chancellor insisting that the structures are not illegal.
