Our reporter visited Namesti Sub County over the weekend to see how the area looks like ten years after the disaster, considered to be worst in Bugisu region. The shadows of the agony caused by the disaster still linger in the lives of many landslide survivors.
Gerald Fungo, the chairman of Bumasa Village says that a number of people are still buried in the soggy ground, and can hardly be accessed due to the shortage of personnel and equipment. The tragedy follows a heavy downpour that lasted up to five hours, on Tuesday.
The Committee Chairperson, Jovah Kamateeka, said it is high time government traces and explains to the country the cause of the mudslides. She explained that people in the affected areas still face threats of future calamities since nobody knows what could have happened up in the mountains where boulders came from.
