Nakapiripirit District Police Commander, Joseph Bongo, says calm has returned and normal business has resumed. He says they have also picked up two suspects, whose identities have been withheld to aid the police investigations.
Kadama are a minority community of Nakapiripirt district in Karamoja sub region. They live around Mount Kinei in the far East of district bordering Amudat as well as Kenya. According to Hon. Esther Anyakun, the Woman MP Nakapiripirit, the community needs affirmative representation in the parliament through their own constituency in order to address political representation.
Unlike, other districts of Karamoja, Nakapiripirit experiences two planting seasons in a year. Farmers in the district mainly grow beans, maize, cassava and other crops while most districts in Karamoja majorly grow sorghum.
The floods affected 50 villages with an estimated population of 30, 000 people when Rivers Namalu, Amaler and Kocol-kokoi burst their banks causing devastating floods that submerged houses and swept away property.
According to the Amudat District Senior Agricultural Officer Joseph Marimoi, the locusts entered through Karita Border area and spread throughout Karita Sub County in the areas of Akou lee, Nacemato, and around the mountains but spread to the Town Council yesterday afternoon. He explains that the insects however migrated in dense swarm westwards towards Nakapipripirit and Nabilatuk districts.
Bagiire explained that desert locusts have been sprayed with poisonous chemicals capable of causing complications and death in humans if they are consumed. He added that the country was food secure and therefore needless for the communities to eat desert locusts.
Led by Maj. Gen. Sam Kavuma, the Deputy Commander of Land Forces the soldiers donned protective gears on their faces as they combed Komoret village where the desert locusts settled in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
Sande Lokii Samaria, 61, a retired Police Sergeant broke down before the Commission while speaking about her land that was reportedly given to Nakapiripirit Primary School without her knowledge. Sande explained that the land grabbers left her family without any land or bother to explain their actions.
In 1961, Athiyo and the late Choudhry Lokwang went to Lancaster in the UK to make a case for the independence representing the people of Karamoja. Their move came at a time when the Colonial Government had set an agenda that Karamoja should remain under their rule, something Athiyo strongly opposed.
At his visit to Namalu Mixed Primary School in Nakapiripirit district, Usami served and shared a meal with pupils at school before he danced and sang together with the children, who were all taken up in awe, at the talent exhibited by the 42-year-old performer.
Francis Lokiru, the LC3 chairman for Nakapiripririt Town Council says the cassava cuttings were distributed when they were already dry. He says they are going to burn them in the presence of OWC officials to send a message to higher authorities.
Their presence was also helpful in curbing cattle thefts in the region. According to locals, the personnel were swift in tracking stolen cattle, impounding animals and looking after them while in army detaches. But over time, the unit became redundant forcing several LDU personnel to abandon the force, while others have been retired.
According to the Auditor Generals Report for the financial year 2017/2018, indicates that the district collected only 135 million shillings out of an estimate of 177 million Shillings in local revenue.
