Following the closure of the Karuma Bridge in September that links Midwestern, Northern Uganda, and West Nile Sub-regions, the government guided that people intending to access Northern Uganda should use alternative routes, including the Masindi Port route via Apac district.

Karuma Bridge was temporarily closed in April this year after engineers found crucial components of the bridge among them the bearings, and the expansion joints had worn out and developed cracks.
The committee's report revealed that 465.52 hectares of land were acquired for the Karuma hydropower project, displacing 3,735 people, including 280 landowners and 134 tenants. The project has affected both Karuma Town Council and Awoo Village.
