A section of National Resistance Movement-NRM legislators who opposed the scrapping of the presidential age limit are engaging their leaders to represent the party in the 2020 polls.

Eighteen of the 27 legislators met president Yoweri Museveni at Statehouse on Wednesday where they discussed their welfare as disgruntled NRM party members.

The MP's also met to ensure that they get approval from President, Museveni who also doubles as the NRM Chairperson to contest on the party ticket.

“For some time, we have been sidelined since 2017. Members are placed in committees they don’t want, they stop them from chairing the committees, and now that it is time for politics, they want to know if the sidelining will continue because most of them thought that they were doing what the people wanted. But this was misunderstood by the party” one of the rebel MP's told URN.

According to the source, they basically wanted to know whether the marginalization will continue but the President assured them that this will not be happening.

Monica Amoding, the Kumi Woman MP who was part of the team said there is need to resolve the dispute since they are still NRM members.

Amongin says for now all the 30 MP's are serving on the NRM ticket and that is one of the reasons they met Museveni.

She defended their decision to meet their party chairperson, saying they can't be wished away.

John Baptist Nambeshe, the Manjiya County MP says he has faced a lot of trouble including being kicked out of the NRM caucus meeting for opposing the lifting of the age limit.

He however, said he has already denounced his NRM membership in favor of the People power pressure group.

Nambeshe revealed that majority of the rebel MPs are returning to the party, adding that those who didn’t meet the president just missed because they hadn’t tested for Covid-19.

In December 2017, 315 MPs voted to remove the 75-year presidential age limit and effectively gave Museveni another chance to contest for the country’s top most.

97 Members voted including 27 from the ruling NRM opposed the proposal pitying them against their party leadership.
