15 Killed in Mayuge Accident

15 people have been killed in a road accident in imanyiro village along the Musita-Lumino highway in Mayuge District.

The deceased who were vendors from Namayingo town council were travelling to Kampala in a taxi registration number UBD 089A. The accident occurred at 5:00 am. 

James Mubi, the Busoga East Police Spokesperson says that the taxi which was overspeeding rammed into a sugarcane Tata Lorry registration number UWP 616 which was stationed at Imanyiro village.

The taxi was carrying 17 passengers. However, two passengers survived with serious injuries and were rushed to Iganga General Hospital.

The deceased have been identified as  Ogundian Adenyi Sidiaq, a Nigerian national, Zaina Babirye, Muhammad Musoke, Willy Okumu, Ibrahim Damaale, the taxi driver, Patrick Musoobo, Christine Naiti, Bashir Wegulo, Zurah Gimbo, and Michael Barasa, all fish dealers from the districts of Busia and Namayingo, Christine Weere, a resident of Namutumba, Michael Musinguzi from Kampala, and Prime Kansiime from Kyenjojo.

Three other persons remain unidentified.

Mubi warned sugarcane truck drivers against parking along the highway.

"Sugarcane trucks are not supposed to be parked along the highway as they reduce on the road size and obstruct other road users which results in accidents," he says.

Namayingo district chairperson, Sanya Ronald told journalists that, most of the dead are part of the fish dealers who ferry their goods to Kampala on Fridays.

“For the past four years, Damaale has been ferrying these fish dealers from the districts of Namayingo, Mayuge and Busia to sell their goods in Kampala but, it is very unfortunate that we lost them today,” he says.
