Athletics Team Shifts Focus On Tokyo Olympics

Uganda Athletics Federation-UAF has turned its focus on the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after conquering the World Half marathon and NN Valencia championships respectively.

The UAF President, Dominick Otuchet disclosed this at a press conference organized by the National Council of Sports to welcome the team that represented Uganda in the World Half Marathon Championships Poland and NN Valencia World Record day.

Joshua Cheptegei clocked 26:11:02 at the NN World Record day event in Valencia for the 10000m while Jacob Kiplimo also bagged gold at the 2020 World Half Marathon in Poland. While receiving the athletes, Otuchet thanked the government of Uganda for supporting the athletics team.

We are looking forward to Tokyo next year and I’m positive that Uganda will celebrate not only one gold medal but many in that championship,” Otuchet said

Team Uganda Athletics captain and long-distance runner, Joshua Cheptegei hailed his teammates for rising Uganda’s flag. He asked Ugandans to continue supporting the team and believing in them. The 10000m NN Valencia world record holder assured the country that his team will not only participate but they will go and seek for more glory. 

“We will make sure that we do whatever it takes to make us prepared. We will make sure that the titles come back to Uganda,” Cheptegei said. Cheptegei is the current the champion of the Diamond 5000m Diamond League title, Commonwealth double and world 10000m.

He, however, says this is just the beginning of his career. Dr. Patrick Ogwel, the NCS Secretary-General, also thanked Uganda Athletics Federation for organizing the athletes and providing the Council with a big pool of Athletes. The team is expected to meet President, Yoweri Museveni in the statehouse to present the medals they won from the two championships on a date yet to be communicated
