The family of the late Brenda Bukooye has dragged SWATT Security Limited to court seeking compensation of Shillings 200 million.

The former hair dresser was allegedly shot dead by a security guard attached to SWATT Security Limited around 8pm on January 23rd, 2019 while walking along Ben Kiwanuka Road from her work place on Galiraya building.

Job Isiiko Amola, the Administrator of Bukoyee’s estate, says the deceased was negligently killed by Caleb Muhwezi, a Security guard attached to SWATT Security Limited who was guarding at Pioneer View along Ben Kiwanuka Road.

In his suit before the High Court Civil Division, Isiiko contends that the security firm acknowledged the incident and wrote to the Administrator General indicating that they were processing settlement from their insurers for Bukoyee’s death resulting from the conduct of their staff.

However, the deceased’s family says to date the compensation hasn’t come. He says that the deceased’s five children aged between 2 and 14 years are going through untold suffering and inconveniences, for which they hold Muhwezi and SWATT liable.

Through their lawyers Aisha Nansubuga and Company Advocates, the families say it was unreasonable and unnecessary for Muhwezi to shoot directly at the deceased or any other person on a very crowded street.

According to a February 13, 2019 Police report, Muhwezi shot dead Bukooye and critically injured Anita Nanyonjo, a Kampala University Student. He was remanded to Luzira Prisons by Buganda road magistrate’s court on charges of murder and attempted murder.

The High Court Civil Division Registry has summoned SWATT Security Limited to file its defense in regards to the case.  This isn’t the only case where a security guard has shot a person this year.  On July 9th, 2019, Moses Anguria, a private Security Guard attached to Quality Supermarket Nalya shot dead Ainebyona Arnold Mugisha, the proprietor of Hickory Bar and Restaurant.

On September 28th, 2019, Kiiza Alkanglo a private security guard shot dead Doribert Atwesigye, at a hostel near Kyambogo University. And most recently, on December 4th, 2019,   a guard attached to Star React Security Guard Limited shot dead Isaac Katagwa, a third year Student of Bachelors in Tourism and Hotel Management at Kampala University.

Katagwa had just returned from his village in Mafubira Sub County in Jinja District for the funeral of his father when he was killed.
