The football fraternity in Uganda is in mourning following the
sudden death of National Assistant Referee Peter Kabugo, who passed away on Friday.
Kabugo collapsed on the field during a Premier League
match between SC Villa and UPDF at Wankulukuku Stadium, where he was serving as
the second assistant referee.
The incident occurred in the 73rd minute, moments
after SC Villa’s Charles Lwanga scored the team's fifth goal in a spirited
counterattack.
But, as players returned to the field after celebrating,
fans noticed Kabugo lying motionless on the far side of the pitch.
The fans quickly signaled for help, prompting players and officials to rush to his aid.
The match was briefly halted as Kabugo was transported by
ambulance to a nearby hospital. In his absence, fourth official Joshua Duula
stepped in, allowing the game to resume.
Kabugo was prounced dead before reaching the
hospital. Referee Assessor Rwamuyamba Rosebell Ram, visibly shaken, shared the
heartbreaking news with her colleagues after the game.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA)
confirmed Kabugo’s passing in a statement, though the cause of death was not
disclosed.
“The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA)
regrets to announce the sudden passing of National Assistant Referee Peter
Kabugo, who collapsed during a league match at Wankulukuku Stadium on Friday
1st November 2024. A postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the
cause of death,” reads part of the statement
“FUFA extends heartfelt
condolences to Peter’s family, loved ones, Uganda Football Referees
Association, and friends. We request privacy for the family during this difficult
time,” reads another part of the statement
But, unconfirmed reports suggest that Kabugo was asthmatic.
Several clubs and players took to social media to mourn
the referee. Mbale heroes said on X; “We
are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of the National Assistant Referee, Peter
Kabugo who collapsed during the SC Villa vs UPDF match in the UPL today and
died on his way to the hospital. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family,
friends, and all affected,”
Maroons also shared their sorrow on X, saying, “We are
deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Assistant Referee Peter Kabugo,
who tragically lost his life while serving the beautiful game this evening. Peter's
ultimate sacrifice embodies the true one-force spirit and dedication,”
SC Villa also took to X to send condolences “Assistant
Referee Peter Kabugo sadly passed away on the way to the hospital after
collapsing during our home game against UPDF FC at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.
May he rest in peace”,
