The Kabale based Freedom Radio has come under fire from health officials for allegedly misleading the public on the corona virus pandemic. Freedom Radio is owned by Justus Orishaba Bagamuhunda, the Executive Director National Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights in Uganda (NAFODU), a non-governmental organisation involved in promoting Democracy, Human Rights and Good Governance in Uganda.

Health and Security authorities accuse the station of feeding the public with misleading information about the pandemic. They particularly say the situation aired misleading information in its segment dubbed “Ensi Nebirikutangaza”, during the Simuka Program which is hosted by Rogers Bronix Asiimwe alias Obwengura and runs from 06:00am to 10:00AM Monday to Friday.

According to the authorities, in one of the segments, Asiimwe reportedly told his listeners that Corona virus was manufactured by a Chinese national studying at one of the Universities in Wuhan City. Asiimwe reportedly also assured his listeners that Corona virus patients can’t recover, saying those who test positive should write their final will.

He alleged listed names of catholic priests who will succumb to COVID19 in the next two days claiming that Italy has already established a computer, which detects the days of COVID patients. Oren Arija, the Kabale district Disease Surveillance Officer, says that he was concerned when he heard Asiimwe misleading the masses about corona virus by airing non-factual information.

He wonders why Aswiimwe feeds the public misleading information about COVID19 as opposed to information issued by the Health Ministry.

Patrick Besigye Keihwa, Kabale District LC 5 chairperson, says the misinformation by Asiimwe interferes with government’s efforts of preventing the spread of the virus.

Darius Nandinda, the Kabale Resident District Commissioner, says the District Security Committee will soon convene and discuss the matter and decide their next course of action.

When contacted Justus Orishaba Bagamuhunda, the proprietor of Freedom Radio, said he was yet to receive a complaint from health and security authorities about the segment.

He however accuses health and security authorities of witch-hunting him under influence from his competitors. The embattled radio presenter, Rogers Bronix Asiimwe alias Obwengura, says he is being harassed out of ignorance.
