Joint security forces in the Karamoja sub-region have successfully recovered 134 stolen cows following separate operations in the districts of Abim and Karenga. The first cattle raid occurred on February 15, 2025, at approximately 00:58 hours, at the kraal of Patrick Lokwang, a 60-year-old kraal leader from Sarachom Central, Sarachom Parish.

The cows were stolen from a kraal in Lobalangit Sub-County, Karenga District. In response, the UPDF and Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) Lobalangit detachments launched a tracking operation, setting up ambushes in the Kamarinyang area, where they successfully recovered all 14 stolen cattle.

The second raid occurred in Alerek Sub-County, Abim District, on Sunday afternoon when warriors attacked Jackson Okech, a 77-year-old herdsman, and others while grazing. The thieves made off with 120 cows. However, the swift intervention of the ASTU of Olem Detach led to a fierce exchange of fire, culminating in the recovery of all the stolen livestock.

Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto regional police spokesperson, confirmed that all the recovered cattle are being held at the barracks pending official handover to their rightful owners. He commended the public for their cooperation and vigilance, which significantly contributed to the success of the recovery operations.

"This successful operation is a testament to the bravery and dedication of the security forces in protecting the livelihoods of the communities they serve," Longole said. In a related development, the Police Anti-Stock Theft Unit also recovered a stolen cow and arrested a suspect in Katakwi District.

On February 14, 2025, the unit recovered one head of cattle stolen from Auro Jennifer, a 44-year-old resident of Abelebuku village, Katakwi Sub-County. Longole confirmed the recovery and said one suspect, identified as Joseph Akere, a 27-year-old resident of Olela village, was apprehended and handed over to Ocorimongin Police Post for further management.

He once again praised the public for their vigilance, which led to both the successful recovery of the stolen cow and the arrest of the suspect.
