The image of Kyazanga Health Center IV in Lwengo district is dented by the dilapidated buildings that endanger the lives of staff and patients.

The Outpatients Department-OPD, Emergency and General Admission wards operate in very old buildings with visible cracks.

Mark Turyeijuka, the Kyazanga Town Council LC V Councilor and Lwengo District Works Committee Chairperson, confirms the sorry state of the health center, which he has taken a toll on the morale of health workers and turned away residents.

He says two of the buildings Kyazanga Health Center IV were condemned and recommended for demolition because they outlived their usefulness.

He however, says the buildings are still in use due to lack of alternatives.

Both the OPD and general wards were built in 1993 as temporary shelters for the expansion of the health center, which was still at level three.

Turyeijuka says various attempts by the district to renovate the facility have failed to yield the desired results because of the change in funding priorities by the central government.

Robert Tuwanje, the Lwengo District Health and Education Committee Chairperson, says they had expected to improve the buildings but their wish was frustrated when government reversed its policy of sending Capital Development Funds to local governments.

Dr. Dominic Kizza, the in charge of Kyazanga Health Centre IV, says the buildings are no longer habitable for patients and staff.

He says besides the dilapidated buildings, the health Centre operates without staff quarters, saying that their repeated pleas to the responsible authorities are yet to yield results.

Dr. Joseph Mutyogoma, the Lwengo District Health Officer, says they are fed up of pleading with government without any response.

He says they are considering organising a donors’ conference to fundraise for the general renovation of the health center.
