NDA Impounds Medicines Worth UGX 361M in Nation Wide Operations

The National Drug Authority-NDA has they impounded 1,206 boxes of assorted medicines valued at Shillings 361M throughout their six months nationwide crackdown on illegal drug outlets. 

Samuel Kyomukama, the NDA head of Enforcement disclosed this following an inspection of drug outlets in Jinja district on Saturday. 

He said they managed to close 592 drug shops in the crackdown that started in March, 2019 either because they were being run by unqualified personnel or selling expired medicines. 

He says some of the drugs shops were found providing restricted services like X-ray, which are illegal at drug outlets, operating without license and in dilapidated structures among others. 

He also says that, 71 veterinary shops were inspected where 133 boxes of assorted medicines worth Shillings 72M where seized and are stored at the different NDA offices all over the country awaiting destruction.  

Kyomukama says 38 suspects were arrested during the operations, adding that they are working with Director of Public Prosecutions to charge them accordingly.

Fredrick Ssekyana, the NDA spokesperson, says landing sites of Kisenyi in Buikwe district, Galilaya and Kawongo in Kayunga district and Bwondha in Mayuge district are full of substandard drug shops.   He said they will carry out frequent operations in the areas to ensure compliance. 

Mohammed Lukwago, the South-Eastern Regional NDA manager, says drug shop operators within the region have resorted to relabeling of expired medicine and sell it to unsuspecting clients.
