Police have used teargas and live bullets to disperse protesters in Mulago and Wandegeya areas in Kampala city. The protesters are demanding for the immediate release of the National Unity Platform-NUP presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

The music artist, cum politician was picked up arrested on Wednesday morning from Luuka district headquarters where he was addressing his campaign rally. This morning, NUP supporters including car washers, Boda Boda riders and welders among others rose up in protest demanding for his unconditional release.

Police first warned the protesters who had started burning car tires and blocking vehicles in Mulago and Wandegeya to disperse in vain. This prompted police to fire teargas and live bullets to disperse them. Over 50 people were affected by teargas and were rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital unconscious.

Arnold Tumwine, one of the protesters asked President, Yoweri Museveni, to order police to release Kyagulanyi as soon as possible. He explained that Kyagulanyi who is popularly known by his stage name Bobi Wine was scheduled to be in Luuka when he was picked up.

He also wondered why police don’t break huge rallies held by NRM candidates and instead offer them protection. Tumwine said they continue protesting until police release their presidential candidate. Several businesses including shops, washing bays, hotels, clinics and spare parts shops among others have closed because of the protests.

Meanwhile, several businesses along Kampala-Gayaza road are under lock and key because of the free Bobi Wine protests.  A group of NUP supporters chanting pro-Kyagulanyi songs have lit born fires and poured heaps of garbage along the road right from Kaleerwa to Kasangati.

Only a few vehicles mainly taxis are driving on the busy road at very low speed. Several traders are seated on the verandas of their closed shops. Around 10:40 am, heavily armed police and military officers stormed various townships and started chasing some of the youths suspected to have lit the born fires.
