Robbers Kill Police Officer, Injure Three Others

A police officer has been killed and three others injured in a gunfire exchange with thugs in Mbale district. 

The incident happened on Thursday afternoon 2Kilometers from Nabumali corner off Mbale-Lwakhakha Road in Nabumali Sub County in Mbale District.   

The deceased has been identified as detective Sergeant Fred Chemonges who has been attached to Mbale Central Police station. 

The injured are Solomon Ikalati, Charles Mukisa, and Spanslaus Tukei.     

The trio is nursing gunshot wounds at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital where they were rushed. 

According to police, the officers were hit while trailing thugs returning from a robbery mission.

The thugs reportedly opened fire when they realized the officers were pursing them leading to a gun fire exchange in which Chemonges lost his life.

John Robert Tukei, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson told URN that the suspected robbers were driving in a Toyota Mark II, which had a fake registration number UAT 112A.

He says the original registration number of the vehicle that belongs to Godfrey Sengondya is UAP 283Y. 

Tukei says the officers shot some of the thugs but they escaped from the scene abandoning their vehicle behind. 

He said police and the army has started a manhunt for the thugs and appealed to anybody with information to leading to the whereabouts of the thugs to share it with police.

Police has opened inquiries into the matter under file number CRP 873/ 2019 at Mbale Central Police Station. 

Cases of armed robberies mainly targeting mobile money operators are on the rise in Mbale district. At least 5 people have been in a space of 6 months.
