Running Water Kills Retired Teacher in Rubanda

Running water has swept off a retired teacher as heavy rains wreak havoc in Rubanda district. The deceased Ben Besigensi alias Kacoco,67 and resident of Rwarugambwa village in Kibuzigye parish, Hamuhambo town council met his death around 7 pm on Sunday, according to Aggrey Bandebaho, the Hamuhambo sub-county LC3 Chairman.

He says that the incident happened at Hakirwa in Bubare sub county. According to Bandebaho, Besigensi was returning home from Karukara in Hamurwa town council on his motorcycle where he had gone to supervise his Irish potato garden that was due for harvesting today.

He, however, explains that upon reaching, Hakirwa, during the downpour he was swept away by running water to the nearby farm. He explains that when the rainwater subsided, residents rescued the Besigensi and rushed him to Rugarama hospital in critical condition but health workers referred him to Kabale regional hospital where he died on arrival.

Heavy rains also destroyed four houses in Kacherere town council, according to Aggrey

Turyatunga, the area LC V councilor. Turyatunga said that the heavy rain which started around 06:00 PM on Sunday evening lasted for more than three hours.  

  He says that running waters also damaged the Muko-Bufundi-Katuna road, Kacherere-Nyarukoro bridge and killed three goats and five sheep in the town council.

On Friday, 13-year-old Hilda Orishaba, a resident of Nangaro in Hamurwa sub-county was also swept away by running water. Orishaba had gone with her mother Beatrice Nyakarungi to the nearby eucalyptus forest.

Last week, lightning struck dead three people and injured another in the same

district. The dead were identified as Stanley Sunday Owoyesiga alias Tissue,63, a

headteacher of Golden Star High School, Ben Kwikiriza,16, a resident of

Rwamuyora village in Muko sub-county and Bright Orikiriza, a resident of

Karambo Village.  

The injured was only identified as Happy from Kamuserwa village in Nyarurambi ward, Rubanda town council. Stephen Ampeire Kasyaba, the Rubanda district LC5 Chairman could not be reached for comment since he did not pick his phone calls.    

Prossy Mbabazi Akampurira, the Rubanda District Woman Member of Parliament has promised to engage district leaders to follow up on the matter so that they write a report and submit it to the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness.
