Two Withdraw From Kasese LC V Race Hours to Polls

 Two candidates have dropped out of the Kasese LC V chairperson’s race a few hours to the polls. They are the National Unity Platform-NUP candidate, Moses Bwambale and independent candidate, Emmanuel Kyalimpa.     

Kyalimpa, who decided to run as an independent after losing the NRM primaries says his decision follows the wise counsel from of NRM officials who asked him to step down in favour of the NRM candidate, Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi. 

He explains that despite deciding to run as an independent, he believes in the NRM ideologies.

The NUP candidate, Moses Bwambale, says he decided to step down in favour of the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC candidate, Geoffrey Sibidendire Bigogo. According to Bwambale, any victory for any of the opposition forces is a win for the betterment of Kasese.   

Brian Basisa, the Kasese District NUP coordinator, says their last minute settlement follows internal discussions among opposition forces where they realized that they are fighting a common enemy. He notes that they must stop NRM from dominating the district, which he thinks will give the government an upper hand to split it.

Basisa disputed claims that their candidate has been lured by the FDC with interest to pick more support for their candidate.

The Kasese District Returning Officer, Ismael Atwijukire Takik has acknowledged receipt of Kyalimpa’s withdraw from the race. He, however, said his office was yet to receive formal notification from the NUP camp over their candidature.

Wilson Kule, a NUP supporter said he was not aware of the decision to withdraw their candidate. He says the move could discourage many of the NUP supporters from casting their vote on Wednesday. The withdrawal of the two candidates now leaves Bigogo Sibendire and Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombin in the race.
