Luuka police are holding a man accused of extorting money from the public during curfew.  

Ayub Wambi is accused of masquerading as a Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF soldiers to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public during curfew.    

The suspect, who is locked up at Nakabugu Central police station was donning military uniform when he was picked up on Tuesday evening.    

According to police, the suspect has been staging roadblocks in Bulanga Sub County where he would order travelers to pay Shillings 20,000 or risk arrest.

Flavia Nangobi, a resident of Bulanga trading center says the suspect forced her to pay money on Sunday evening before the recommended curfew time.  

"Wambi directed me to pay him at 6:00pm and whipped me unsparingly when I declined to pay him," she said.        

Bosco Sserunjogi, the Luuka District Police Commander, says the suspect will be prosecuted in courts of law. He says he has deployed officers to find his accomplices.
