Uganda Wildlife Authority has suspended hiking activities to Margherita Peak in Rwenzori National Park. A statement from the authority on Tuesday said the decision comes as a precautionary measure after what UWA described as a comprehensive assessment by its team.

The UWA said the assessment was in response to the reported crevasse formation in the Margherita glacier.

A crevasse is a deep, wedge-shaped opening in a moving mass of ice called a glacier. Crevasses usually form in the top 50 meters (160 feet) of a glacier, where the ice is brittle.

“To make hiking safer, we are exploring the option of installing a permanent ladder at a strategic location on the right side of the Margherita glacier. This alternative route will provide a safer passage for hikers to Margherita” said the statement issued by UWA publicist, Bashir Hangi.

In the interim, UWA urges visitors to explore other picturesque peaks within the Rwenzori National Park. These according to Hangi include Mount Speak, Mount Baker, and Cheptegei Peak on Stanley Range.

“These routes offer breathtaking views and unique experiences amidst the stunning landscape of the park,” the statement said.

The Authority said it prioritizes the safety of the clients. “We are committed to ensuring that all clients enjoy their visit to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on hiking activities to Margherita as developments unfold,”
