Ten sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Reparatrix (IHMR - Gogonya) sisters have taken permanent vows to serve God and the Church.

The sisters in their vows committed themselves to live a life of chastity, poverty and obedience. In an expression of total submission, the sisters prostrated as the clergy and congregation prayed for them to live to their calling.

Two senior members celebrated 60 years in service while another four and two had their golden and silver jubilees respectively at an event which was attended by relatives and Christians at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Reparatrix convent at Gogonya on Wednesday.

Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere who led the colourful ceremony urged those who had taken their perpetual vows and the jubilant to face challenges they come across with fortitude.  He commended them for the decision to commit their entire lives to the service of God and appealed to them to set goals that advance their organization, the Church and humanity in total.

Alluding to the undertaking, the Archbishop asked the sisters to be communal, share and avoid greed, which he said was prevalent in the world today.  He prayed to God to save the world from the vices of greed and selfishness.

Hundreds of priests and brothers who the Immaculate Heart of Mary Reparatrix Superior General Sr Maria Speranza Namusisi commended for their support attended the function.  Notable among these were Brother Casio Aizire Provincial Superior of the Brothers of Christian Instruction – Kisubi and Fr Anthony Kibira of the Comboni missionaries.

Also in attendance were Uganda Catholic Episcopal Conference chairman and bishop of Mityana Diocese Bishop Joseph Anthony Zziwa, Mukono Diocesan Bishop, Christopher Kakooza and his predecessor Dr Mathias Ssekamanya.

Sr Namusisi commended the parents of the sisters for surrendering their children to God, underscoring the importance of participating in repairing souls and returning the wired to God.  He urged them to send more children to join the congregation.

Welcoming those who took perpetual vows for the first time, Sr Namusisi counselled them to be bold and firm in the face of an increasingly challenging world.  She urged them to commit to prayer, tolerance and handling God’s people without sectarian bias.

The Sisters of the IHMR was founded in Uganda by Archbishop Henry Streitcher in 1927 and later elevated to a canonical organisation in the Church by Archbishop Louis Joseph Cabana in 1948.  The two were white missionaries to Uganda.
