Construction of UGX 1.2B Piped Water Project Starts in Alebtong

Construction of a 1.2 billion Shillings gravity flow water project has started in Abako sub-county Alebtong District. The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Local Government under a five-year Local Economic Growth Support initiative funded by the Islamic Development Bank.

The initiative prioritizes the construction and rehabilitation of valley tanks, surface water schemes for irrigation and piped water system for consumption, construction of markets, and rehabilitation of roads among others.

This year, Alebtong District is constructing Multi-Purpose Market Sheds valued at 303 million Shillings in Alebtong Town Council and the piped water system in Abako sub-county. The water project undertaken by M/S Don- Mo Contractors will have 10 water kiosks and 50-yard taps supplying water through gravity from a 1,000 cubic litre tank.

The tank will provide water to primary and secondary schools, health centres, the Catholic parish of Alanyi and the sub-county headquarters among others. Local Government Raphael Magyezi who commissioned called the works on Tuesday asked the contractor to ensure that the water connection is extended to the neighbouring villages.

Earlier, the minister who officiated the launch of the construction of the market sheds at Alebtong Town Council tasked the district authorities to ensure that the two projects achieve their objectives of promoting good health and economic growth in the district.

Assumpta Ikiriza Tibamwenda, a Technical Advisor for the Local Economic Growth Support Initiative explains that the water project is aimed at improving access to water in every district in the country, especially those which are water stressed.

On the other hand, Alfred Okite, the Assistant Engineering Officer who is supervising the water project says upon completion, the project will improve the district’s water coverage by almost 10 per cent.

Meanwhile, Bimbona Simon, the Alebtong Chief Administrative Officer says the project site will be fenced and community-around sensitized to ensure sustainability.

Alebtong is one of the 17 districts across the country which is implementing the Local Economic Growth Support Initiativesince the financial year 2018/2019.
