According to Uryek-Wun, a tube essential in relaying the images from scans malfunctioned due to the power fluctuation rendering the machine unusable for diagnosis.

Gulu Regional Referral Hospital is once again facing disruptions in diagnostic services due to the breakdown of its Computed Tomography (CT) scan machine. The multi-billion shilling machine, installed by the Ministry of Health in November 2022, has faced repeated technical setbacks since it became operational in June 2023.
Walter Uryek-Wun, the Principal
Assistant Secretary at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, told Uganda Radio Network
on Thursday that the CT scan broke down a month ago due to power fluctuation. According to Uryek-Wun, a tube
essential in relaying the images from scans malfunctioned due to the power
fluctuation, rendering the machine unusable for diagnosis.
The breakdown of the CT scan has since
affected some vulnerable patients within the Acholi Sub-region who seek diagnostic
services at an affordable rate. However, in the meantime,
according to Uryek-Wun, patients who need specialized internal body
scans are being referred to either Mulago National Referral Hospital or Aber Hospital
in Oyam District.
He noted that the damaged
component of the CT scan alone cost approximately 27 million shillings, adding
that after placing an order for it from Germany, the equipment was delivered early
this week and awaits clearance from Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
While he didn’t provide a specific
timeline, the CT scan will start operating again, Uryek-Wun noted that repairs
will commence immediately after the equipment is released by URA. In April 2024, the CT Scan at the
Hospital broke down due to power fluctuation, just eight months after the
medics began using it for diagnosis.
Affordable rates
The Health Ministry, in a June 3, 2023, circular directed all Regional Referral Hospitals across the country to charge
patients in need of CT Scan 120,000 shillings for non-contrast procedures and
150,000 shillings for contrast procedures.
About CT Scan
CT Scan is a diagnostic imaging
procedure that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce
images of the internal body. A CT scan shows
detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones and soft tissues.
