The Holy Alliance team of the Democratic Party (DP) in West Nile has issued a strong warning against the manipulation of delegates ahead of the party's national delegates conference later this month.
Led by former DP Vice President for Northern Uganda, Counsel Alitia Elia, the West Nile group successfully secured nomination on May 6, 2025, to contest for the position of DP President General.
The election is scheduled to take place on May 30 in Mbarara City.
Other nominated candidates include the current DP President General and Minister for Constitutional Affairs in the NRM government, Nobert Mao; Lulume Bayiga of Buikwe South Constituency; and Richard Sebamala of Bukoto Central Constituency.
As the four candidates continue to mobilize support, fears of possible manipulation of delegates have emerged. Speaking during a press briefing in Arua City, Alitia Elia appealed to delegates to uphold integrity and resist any attempts at manipulation through "dirty money," urging them to vote for leaders committed to reviving the Democratic Party's historical values.

Fadhil Lemeriga, the Chairperson of Alitia’s Presidential Campaign Task Force, warned of dire consequences if the delegates allow themselves to be swayed, saying such actions could lead to further disintegration of the party.

Sunday Asau, the Administrative Secretary in the office of the DP Vice President for the Northern Region and spokesperson for Alitia’s campaign, echoed similar concerns. He urged delegates to exercise integrity to redeem the image of the DP and that of the country.

Meanwhile, Gasper Piriyo, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Democratic Party, called upon all candidates and delegates to uphold the party's core values of "Truth and Justice" during the conference.
At least 1,600 delegates from across Uganda are expected to converge in Mbarara City for the two-day conference, where they will elect a new DP President General — a leader who could also become the party's presidential flagbearer in the 2026 general elections.
