Krausz, Thuzar Win Uganda International Badminton Open Titles

The Championship sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and graded as an International Series climaxed at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

 Hungary’s Gergely Krausz and Thet Htar Thuzar from Myanmar lifed the men and women singles’ titles at the 2020 Uganda International Open Championship on Sunday.

The Championship sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and graded as an International Series climaxed at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

Krausz needed 44 minutes to beat Sri Lanka’s Nikula Karunaratne 21-18, 18-21, 21-13. “I am happy to win the final against a very experienced player,” said Krausz after the game. Nikula Karunaratne won the men’s singles of the 2016 Uganda International Open Championship.

In the women’s final Thuzar fought to defeat India’s Aakarshi Kashyap 21-14, 16-21, 21-18.

Uganda’s best male players Davies Senono and Expedito Emuddu reached the second round. The pair of Betty Apio and Brenda Awor (Uganda) also reached the quarter finals of the women’s doubles.

The Indian pair of Kona Tarun and Shivam Sharma defeated Nigeria’s Godwin Olofua and Anuoluwapo Opeyori 21-15, 22-20 in the men’s doubles final. Kona Tarun again patterned with Meghana Jakkampudi to beat Shivan Sharma and Poorvisha Ram 2-1 in the mixed doubles final.

Peru’s pair of Daniela Macias and Danica Nishimura tried to fight back in the women’s doubles final but lost 21-17, 20-22, 21-14 to India’s Meghana Jakkampudi and Poorvisha Ram.

Ugandan players will now shift attention to the 2020 Kenya International Badminton Open Championship which runs February 27th to March 1st in Mombasa.
