MUST Lecturers Suspend Strike

According to Julius Taremwa, the Mbarara University of Science and Technology Senior Administration Forum - (MUSTASA) general secretary, the decision was taken to ensure that the students sit exams.

Lecturers of Mbarara University of Science and Technology have suspended their strike for four weeks pending investigations by the parliamentary committee on education.              

                                                                                                                                    According to Julius Taremwa, the Mbarara University of Science and Technology Senior Administration Forum - (MUSTASA) general secretary, the decision was taken to ensure that the students sit exams.

  Taremwa also says that the lecturers allowed the parliamentary committee on Education to finalise the work that they have started. He further revealed that a team from the office of the Auditor General is at the University for a Forensic Audit.

  Michael Katongole, the Mbarara University Guild President says that the decision by the staff is highly welcome and calls on the government to move in and solve the issues raised by the staff.

  Katongole adds that if the staff grievances are not addressed, the strike will resume.

  Jackson Katusiime a student at the University says that the decision to resume work by the staff is vital since some of the students who were finalists were stuck.

  Mbarara University lecturers laid down their tools on 2nd May demanding for the resignation of the Vice-chancellor Celestino Obua and the University Secretary Melcure Byaruhanga.

  They were accused of mal-administration and staff harassment. The lecturers also revealed that the vice-chancellor was trying to sabotage the search process as his term of office expires in October 2019.

  On Thursday MPs on the  parliamentary committee on education spent the whole day meeting the leaders of the lecturers and the administration at Kihumuro campus.
