The Police in Kitgum District have recovered an AK47 assault rifle loaded with five rounds of ammunition that was stolen from a security guard attached to Security Group Africa.

The gun was reportedly stolen from a guard identified as Denis Muntu, 24 while guarding Sun King Solar Offices in Kitgum Municipality at about 1:45 am Saturday morning.

The Kitgum District Police Commander Moses Bwire told URN in an interview on Saturday that Muntu could have fallen asleep on duty when the thug snatched his gun and run away with it.

Bwire says Muntu’s colleague identified as Patrick Akena who was also on guard tried to pursue the thug but failed to apprehend him.

He says police was informed immediately of the incident adding that the suspect was later arrested in an operation 24 kilometers away while trying to escape to the newly created Karenga district, Northeast of Karamoja region.

Bwire says the suspect identified as Patrick Obonyo was a former security Guard at SGA.

He says Obonyo is being detained at Kitgum Matidi Police Post along with the stolen gun pending transfer to Kitgum Central Police Station where he will be charged with theft of gun.

Bwire adds that they have also detained Muntu and Akena at Kitgum Central Police Station to help police in investigating the case registered under SD REF 05/03/08/19.
