Central Division authorities in Kabale Municipality have closed the premises of Freedom Radio over unpaid taxes.

Freedom Radio is owned by Justus Orishaba Bagamuhunda, the Executive Director National Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights in Uganda (NAFODU), a non-governmental organization that aims at promoting Democracy, human rights and good governance in Uganda.

Bagamuhunda also operates Freedom Institute for Law and ICT Studies (FILIS) under Freedom Radio in the same building. Our reporter visited the radio station premises along Bwankosya drive in Kabale municipality and found it locked with two padlocks.

No worker was in the vicinity. The radio was playing nonstop music on air. The Assistant Town Clerk in charge of Central Division, Alex Baingana told our reporter that the radio station has failed to pay ground rent for the 2018/2019 financial year, which has accumulated to Shillings 602,000 as well as operational Tax to the tune of Shillings 550,000.

Baingana says that they were forced to close the premises after Bagamuhunda repeatedly declined to honor their demand notices. He says they will reopen the radio station premises immediately Bagamuhunda clears the taxes.

Bagamuhunda told URN on phone that he wasn’t aware of the closure of the radio station premises since he isn’t in Kabale town. He declined to comment about the matter.  The radio premises were still closed by the time of publishing this story.
