The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli is dead. Vice President, Samia Suluhu Hassan in a televised message to the country announced Magufuli’s death on Wednesday night.

Hassan said Magufuli who has been at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute since March 6th died of a heart complications at Mzena Hospital.

She said Magufuli had first been briefly admitted to the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute on March 6, but was subsequently discharged.

She revealed that his condition later deteriorated and that he had to be rushed to the hospital again on March 14 where here died of a chronic atrial fibrillation-a heart complication. The Vice President announced 14-day of mourning with flags in the United Republic of Tanzania flying at half-mast.

The government has said more information will be delivered to the nation. Speculation had been rife that Magufuli had been infected with the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Since over a week ago there have been reports that Magufuli was not responding well while in Nairobi, Kenya for treatment, and was later flown back to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Several opposition members have been asking the whereabouts of Magufuli. Since the pandemic was declared in March 2020, Magufuli, aged 61 had downplayed the severity of the virus and only recently asked the general public to be more careful.

Last July another former President of Tanzania Benjamin Mkapa, also died in a hospital in Dar es Salaam Hospital where he had been admitted for an undisclosed illness. Mkapa led Tanzania from 1995 to 2005.
