Scores Feared Dead in Jinja Road Accident

More than ten people are feared dead in a road accident along the Jinja - Kamuli highway. The accident occurred on Monday at Walumbe junction, Buwenge town council.

John Waiswa, an eye witness says that a truck carrying sugarcane lost control while going up a hill at Walumbe junction and rolled back before it overturned.

"The truck consequently rolled backwards and fell over, spilling canes onto the tarmac. In the process this caused an obstruction on the busy highway," he says.

Another eye witness only identified as Nyenjje says that as police and residents were trying to clear the truck Registration number UAK 344V off the road, another lorry registration number UAK 996Z, also loaded with sugar cane rammed into them.

Moses Batwala, a former district councillor who rescued some of the victims says that he counted 10 bodies that were taken to Buwenge health centre IV mortuary.

"Our efforts now are on taking the badly injured to Jinja referral hospital. The dead are at the mortuary," he says.

Henry Mugarura, the Kiira North Division Police Commander confirmed the accident.He said that they are yet to establish the exact number of fatalities.
