At least 10 people were critically injured in a nasty road accident involving a bus and trailer along the Gulu-Kampala Highway on Sunday night. The accident occurred after a speeding bus registration number UAM 566C that belongs to KK Travelers rammed into a stationery trailer number UAA 659 R. Samuel Bamuzibire, the Luweero District Police Commander identifies the injured as Sarah Namatovu, Adulu Zulu, Mubarak Vita, Joseph Petiya, Nelson Alege, and Grace Nassozi amongst others. Bamuzibire says that some of the victims were badly injured as they sustained broken hands and legs, adding that they couldn’t be handled at Kasana Health Center IV. Bamuzibire says that they suspect that the bus driver rammed into the stationary trailer after he tried to over take but saw an on coming vehicle. He says that they are hunting for the bus driver who is still at large, to help police with the investigations. James Ssebaduka, an eye witness blames the accident on reckless driving on the part of the bus driver. He says that the bus was running at a terrible speed, which made it difficult for the driver to break after noticing an oncoming vehicle. George Gumisiriza, a resident of the area has asked police to intensify night patrols saying that, both bus and commuter taxi drivers are found of operating in disregard to traffic regulations during the festive season to maximize profits.
Samuel Bamuzibire, the Luweero District Police Commander says that they have deployed extra traffic police officers on the road to check on bad driving to minimize accidents as the festive season draws closer. The wreckage of both vehicles has been towed to Luweero Central Police Station. He says that some of the victims were badly injured and couldn’t be handled at Kasana Health Center IV.Despite the fact that police is yet to release an official report, about 15 people have been killed along the Gulu-Luweero road since the beginning of this year.
