More than 100 families in Rwampara County in Mbarara district are facing eviction from a 50 hectare piece of land after the Mbarara magistrate’s court declared them squatters. The families were found guilty of occupying the land found Bwenkoma, Nyakayojo Sub County without authorization from Mary Kebita, its legitimate owner.
Kebite allegedly took possession of the land through the Administrator general after the death of her brother Joseph Karabareme, the heir to the estate of their late father George Mpekire. Karabareme was appointed care taker to the property by the clan leaders but he subdivided it into plots, which he sold to different people before he died.
However, upon his death Kebite obtained letters of administration and successfully sued all the occupants on the land for trespass. Her court victory has caused unrest amongst the affected people due to their impending eviction from the land. Many of the occupants have vowed to die defending their land saying they legally acquired it from Kebite’s deceased brother.
They claim to have acquired general receipts from the sub county authorities to confirm the purchase agreements. Robert Muganyizi, one of the victims wonders why Kebite is planning to evict them after so many years when the land transactions where done with the follow knowledge of the family members and local council officials. Muganyizi vows to seek justice through all possible means.
