Iganga district are investigating the death of an 11-year-old boy at murrum excavation site. The deceased is Peter Mugabi, a resident of Nakigo village in Nakigo Sub County in Iganga.

Mugabi reportedly met his death on Thursday afternoon while loading murrum on a truck together with other casual laborer but accidentally slid back and was buried in the murrum.

The owners of the excavation mining site reportedly fled the scene after notifying local leaders. A police source told URN on condition of anonymity that parents send children to the mining site where they earn between Shillings 3000 to 5000 daily.

“We have tried to ensure that, kids are out of these quarries in vain, because parents themselves force their kids to look for employment in these quarries despite the risks involved,” he said. Justine Nantunda, a relative to the deceased said she was summoned to the police station only to be notified of her nephew’s death.

“All along I was thinking that my boy had gone to play with his friends but the detective informed me that he is dead. I am really shocked,” she said. David Ndaula the Iganga District Police Commander says the deceased’s body is lying at Iganga general hospital mortuary pending postmortem.
