An average of 12 lives perished daily in road crashes in 2022, according to the annual crime report compiled by the Directorate of Traffic Police.

According to the report, 20394 accidents involving 21, 473 people were registered in the year 2022 under review. Of the 21, 473 victims, 15227 escaped with serious injuries while 1712 sustained minor injuries. Reading the report, Nuwabine said that 47 people died resulting from tyre burst on the road.

Apart from Tyre bursts, Traffic Police blamed the majority of the accidents on the use of Toyota Hiace vehicles popularly known as drones as transport vehicles, which claimed the lives of more than 800 people.

Traffic Police report shows that most road accidents were recorded between 7 pm and 8 pm, which was attributed to fatigue among road users. There was also a spike in accidents during the festive season, for instance, 55 people died in road crashes in four days of the 206 crashes recorded between December, 23 and 26, 2022.
Nuwabiine revealed that they have created a data analysis center to inform their enforcement strategy and tactics. “Something needs to be done about this trend of affairs. These figures for crashes are unacceptable in our country. Some of these accidents may be disguised in the form of crime or in the form of fraud,” the police traffic director said.
