16-Year Old Hangs Self Outside Family Home

A 16-year old in Kibaale has hanged himself, as suicide cases escalate in the district.

 

Joshua Ayine was found hanging dead on a jack fruit tree at his parent’s home in Kiryani village, Kiryanga Sub County on Friday morning. The deceased used a rope to hang himself a few metres away from their house.

 

Fred Bukungu, the father, says although he slept in the same house with Ayine on Thursday night, he was shocked to learn from the neighbours that his son was hanging dead on a tree in the morning.

 

Bukungu says his son had developed a mental problem for the last two weeks but was treated at Kagadi Hospital. He adds that on Thursday evening he had complained of headache. Bakungu suspects his son sneaked out of the house in the middle of night to end his life because of severe headache.

 

John Ojokuna Elatu, the Kibaale district police commander says although there is a rise in suicide cases in the district, its rare among such juveniles. Last year a ten-year old boy in Kiryani village Kagadi town council hanged himself to avoid going to school.

 

The incident brings to six suicide cases in the district in less than two months. DPC Ojukuna says police has scaled up community policing programs and are encouraging people to always share their problems for counselling as a remedy to suicide.
