17-Year-Old Girl in Kwania Arrested over Child's Death

It is alleged that Acilu lied to the relatives that she had taken the child to the father on December 30, 2024, but on January 1, she was put under pressure and confessed that she killed the child and buried him in the garden because she had nothing to feed the baby.

Police at Kwania Central Police Station have arrested a 17-year-old girl for allegedly killing her 8-month-old son.  The suspect, Mariam Acilu, is a resident of Apwori village, Acenlworo parish, Atongtidi Sub County. 

It is alleged that Acilu lied to the relatives that she had taken the child to the father on December 30, 2024, but on January 1, she was put under pressure and confessed that she killed the child and buried him in the garden because she had nothing to feed the baby.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson said police shall conduct a thorough investigation.

Richard Obwol, the LCII Chairman of Acenlworo Parish said the incident comes a few days after policemen rescued two babies abandoned in the area. Obwol said the Child Protection Unit has recorded seven cases of child neglect within only one month.

Oscar Okello, the Community Development Facilitator of Lango Child and Community Development Federation (LACCODEF) said the trend at which cases of child rights violations are rising is worrying and demands intervention.

A report from Kwania District Probation Department indicates that 37 cases of child rights abuse were registered in Atongtidi, Aduku, Chawente and Inomo Sub County within only two months.
