The police in Arua have arrested and detained a Dinka refugee for killing his younger brother in Ocea Refugee Settlement in Uriama Sub County Arua district. The 17-year old was picked up by the police and detained at Arua Central Police Station, pending charges of murder.

According to the Arua District Police Commander  Dennis Ochama, who visited the scene of the crime on Wednesday, the minor, now a juvenile offender, picked a domestic quarrel with his younger brother on Tuesday afternoon. It is alleged that the elder brother kicked his sibling in the navel, a result of which he collapsed and died on the spot.

Chuol Mier Mar,  a Nuer and neighbour to the deceased reported the matter to Ocea police who in turn alerted the police of Arua to pick the body for postmortem and the suspect for detention.

A case of murder has been registered at Arua Central Police Station as more inquiries continue into the matter. Josephine Angucia, the police spokesperson for West Nile said cases of domestic violence have remained high among the refugees despite several interventions by the police and other partners through community policing.

She noted that the situation has been worsened by the lockdown which has confined the refugees all at home in the Camps and in the event of disagreements, fights erupt easily. Last year, four Dinkas died after a fight ensued between them following a disagreement over the outcome of a football match

According to the police report, most incidences, especially among the Dinkas and Nuers, are detected when someone has been killed or the situation has cooled because they act on short notice with maximum force.
