18-Year Old Aguma Stops Nigeria's Ubon

Ugandas up-coming tennis player Boris Aguma has earned his first international ranking point after defeating Nigerias Joseph Imeh Ubon in the first round of the Uganda ITF Pro Futures 4 at Lugogo Tennis Club.

Uganda's up-coming tennis player Boris Aguma has earned his first international ranking point after defeating Nigeria's Joseph Imeh Ubon in the first round of the Uganda ITF Pro Futures 4 at Lugogo Tennis Club.

Aguma cheered on by the home fans beat Ubon 6-2, 6-3 in 1hr32mins. “ I am happy with the way I have played today and the fact that I have earned one ranking point so far,” said Aguma after the game.

To reach the first round of the main draw Aguma battled through the qualifiers to defeat England's Joe Cooper and Alexey Dubinin (Russia). The youngster now joins another Ugandan Duncan Mugabe who stormed the last 16 on Monday.

Uganda's second best player David Oringa failed to make it past the first round as he fell miserably 6-1, 6-0 to India's Kunal Anand in only 52 minutes.

Kenya's Sheil Kotecha who got a wildcard into the main draw also suffered defeat to the tournament's seed 2 David Perez Sanz (Spain) 6-4, 6-3. Russia's Ivan Nedelko who won the Uganda ITF Pro Futures 1 and 3 also cruised through to the next round defeating Vasisht Cheruku 6-2, 6-2.

South Africa's Lance-Pierre Du Toit also advanced to the next stage with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Christain Paul (Nigeria).

In the men's doubles Mugabe paired with Russia's Anton Chekhov to beat Oringa and Ajeet Rai (New Zealand) 4-6, 7-6, (10-8). They will now face the pair of Darko Bojanovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Shunsuke Wakita (Japan) at the quarter final stage.

On Wednesday Uganda's Mugabe and Aguma will be up against Marco Miceli (Italy) and Goran Markovic (Serbia) respectively.
