At least 200 male senior four and six candidates of Kantare Secondary school in Kabale district have been suspended over clashes.  The students were suspended early on Monday following clashes that started on Sunday morning. Sources at the school claim that trouble started after senior six students beat up their senior four colleague accusing him of stealing a mobile phone belonging to their classmate. This didn't go down with the senior students, who decided to avenge the attack on their classmates plunging the entire school in chaos. The senior four students also accused the school administration of siding with their senior six colleagues. They also accused the administration of harassment and poor feeding.  A teacher who preferred to speak on condition of anonymity said mos of the students were under the influence of alcohol. This morning, police took over the school but failed to contain the students prompting management to suspend all male students. Brian Tumwebaze Mbabazi, the head teacher Kantare Secondary school says they decided to suspend the students to restore sanity at the school.

He says management will convene a meeting with parents and decide a way forward before the students are recalled.  Mbabazi however, down plays the complaints raised by students against management.  Ely Maate, the Kigezi regional police spokesperson says police will remain at the school until total calm is restored.
