More than 2,000 undersize fishing nets were impounded on Friday, from Lake George in Kasese district.

The nets were impounded in an overnight operation, by a joint force of police and fisheries officers.

Julius Baluku, the district fisheries officer, said that the operation was aimed at curbing illegal fishing activities on Lake George.

Eighteen fishing canoes were also destroyed at Kasenyi and Hamukungu landing sites. Baluku urged fisher men to use the recommended nets of 4.5 inches and above.

The  fisheries officers accused some members of Beach Management Units (BMU) of showing reluctance to fight illegal fishing activities on the lake.

On Tuesday fisheries officers from Entebbe also impounded one truck and a saloon car that were alleged carrying immature fish.

The vehicles carried fish from Lakes Victoria and George from Mahyora landing site in Kamwenge district. The owners of the fish and the drivers were on Friday charged in the Kasese magistrate’s court.

In 2009, there was great panic among the fishing communities and consumers in Kasese and neighboring districts when the Fisheries ministry threatened to close lake George, due to illegal fishing.
