30 families in Rubiri cell in Nyamityobora ward in Mbarara municipality are living in fear of being evicted from their land. Duncan Bwarenga, a local businessman is threatening to evict the families from a 5 acre piece of land. The residents have petitioned Medard Bitekyerezo, the Mbarara municipality member of parliament to intervene and stop Bwarenga from taking over thei land. According to residents Bwarenga bought a small piece of land, but he instead went ahead and processed a land title for 5 acres of land.
Anna Magezi, one of the affected residents explains that she bought her land from Abdul Mukasa, but to her surprise she has been blocked by Bwarenga from registering it. Magezi explains that whenever she goes to the district land board to process a title for her land, she is told that the land belongs to Bwarenga. She accuses the businessman of forging signatures with people she didn’t name to grab their land. Amos Katureebe, the area LC 3 councilor has called for the intervention of the authorities to stop the eviction of his electorate.
He attributes the increased cases of land grabbing to the failure to involve local council authorities in land transactions. Katureebe says that wealth people deal with land committees and get titles without the knowledge of the sitting tenants on the land. But Bweranga insists that he is the true owner of the disputed land, saying that he will not be intimidated by squatters. Bweranga explains that he wants the squatters to vacate his land to pave way for its redevelopment.
