4 Dead, 9 Injured In Jinja Accident

At least four passengers have died on spot and nine others injured in a motor accident on Jinja-Iganga highway.

At least four passengers have died on spot and nine others injured in a motor accident on Jinja-Iganga highway. 

The Thursday morning accident occurred when a Toyota Canter registration number UAT 827E loaded with water containers lost control at Wandago village and collided head on with a Toyota Hiace commuter taxi registration number UAM 340Y.

The accident occurred at around 10:00am.

Tadeo Odoi, one of the survivors, says all the dead included three women and the driver of the Toyota Hiace.

The dead have been identified as Musaifa Ndeyawo, Eseza Nabirye, Petwa Bafakuwulira, the Senor Nursing Officer at Iganga hospital and Monica Namukose from Wandago village in Jinja.

Those admitted at Jinja and Iganga hospitals include Edirisa Ndeyawo, Tadeo Odoi, Joseph Samanya, Patrick Musubule, Ezekiel Limbi and one youth in his mid twenties who is in coma.

Sister Elizabeth Kakaire, the In-charge Ward Nine at Jinja hospital says six accident survivors have been admitted to Jinja regional referral hospital causality, three of whom are in critical condition.

Samson Lubega, Busoga regional police spokesperson says the cause of the accident is yet to be established as police gathers information.

Tadeo Odoi says that one of the taxi’s front tyres burst as they were over taking by a Toyota Ipsum. The taxi then knocked head on with the Canter.

At Iganga hospital, business was almost paralyzed today morning after the news of Petwa Bafakuwulira’s death trickled in. Employees could be seen crying as they ran to the deceased’s residence, while others formed small groups and stood in silence.

 

The Hospital administrator Julio Kabusera said Bafakuwulira had served the hospital for over 10 years and that by the time of her death she had been promoted to the level of Senor Nursing Officer.
